The origins of the show
Le International Festival of Pyro-Melodic Art is a fireworks and symphonic music show organised in the seaside resort of Royan. This fairytale show has a long history and continues to attract bigger and bigger crowds every year.
Its origins date back to 1989, when the municipality wanted to symbolically close the summer season with a big fireworks display. The date was chosen: 15 August. The venue, the one that attracts the most people: the Grande-Conche beach. The show was called Royan Pyro-Symphonic Festival because at the time it only involved the people of Royanne.
The performance lasts one hour, during which pyrotechnic effects dance in the sky against a backdrop of melodious symphonic music. At the same time, texts relating to the chosen theme are broadcast. Special effects, lasers, water jets, water screens and an innovative sound system have been added to make the show even more exciting. make the show much more spectacular.
On the evening before the show, visitors can enjoy the sardinade, A meal of grilled sardines to the sound of traditional orchestras. The real show starts at around 11pm and goes on until midnight. The evening comes to a close with a grand ball held in the market square where the sardinade took place.
From the International Festival of Art and Pyrotechnics to the International Festival of Pyromelodic Art
Le International Festival of Pyro-Melodic Art was launched in 2015. More specifically, it has two origins Royan Pyro-Symphonic Festival and the International Festival of Art and Pyrotechnics of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer.
Le International Festival of Art and Pyrotechnics took place in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer from 2002 to 2013. As its name suggests, it involves pyrotechnics technicians from other countries. The first edition saw the participation of Italy and Spain alongside France.
This festival focuses on competition for pyrotechnicians who are judged on their talent, through the quality of their show. A jury is set up to decide the winner. An audience prize is also awarded, with the winner decided by applause.
Over the years, many countries have taken part: Australia, China, Germany, Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, Mexico, Polynesia, Bulgaria, Canada, Singapore, Argentina, South Africa, the United States, Morocco, the United Kingdom, India, Mexico, South Korea... Unfortunately, this grandiose show came to an end after the last edition in 2013.
Royan town council took over the concept in 2015. It is associating it with its Pyro-symphonic Festival to give birth to Royan International Pyromelodic Art Festival. It has become a major event in the Charente-Maritime region and one of the finest fireworks displays in France.

Le festival is always held on 15 August from 10.30 pm on the Grande Conche beach in Royan. The show is free, but you need to take a few precautions to ensure your safety. It is advisable not to bring small children to the show because of the late hour, the crowds and the noise of the fireworks.
