A charming seaside town of charm, Royan is a popular destination for its five fine sandy beaches and the charm of its Belle-Époque architecture districts. Between its surf spots, its quiet coves and its large family beach, it meets all expectations. The beach of Grande Conche is recognizable by its tents with white and blue stripes, which have become emblematic of the pretty seaside town. A city of Art and History, Royan also has a beautiful built heritage to show its visitors. As the city was largely destroyed during the Second World War, many buildings have a typical 1950s architecture. They rub shoulders with the 19th century buildings with an unusual harmony. The lighthouse of Cordouan, the oldest in France, is the essential monument of Royan. Don’t miss a walk along the harbour: it is bordered by a pleasant pedestrian walkway and a vast shopping mall.
