In Royan, the beaches are in town ! With gentle slopes and fine sand, they all have standard facilities (showers, toilets and often a bar). Sun umbrellas and deckchairs can be hired and the beaches are supervised from 11am to 7pm. The Plage de Foncillon, close to the Palais des Congrès, is one of the quietest. You can watch the surfers on the spot at Plage de Pontaillac, the trendiest in the area with its colourful tents. Le Chay beach is ideal for a family picnic in the shade of the cliffs. You can also lounging on the fine sand of the south-facing Grande Conche, swim in the small cove that shelters the Pigeonnier beach. The sand is golden and the oceanic climate, very pleasant. Some compete in building a sandcastle, while others read under a parasol. The more sporty ones play volleyball or sign up for the yacht club and the little ones can enjoy the activities at the children's club. Intrepid thrill-seekers won't hesitate to take to the skies for a flight over the sublime coastline from Merschers sur Gironde to Royan, overlooking Fort Boyard and the Ile de Ré.
