Royan, a town with a rich history

Royan is a commune in the department of Charente-Maritime (New Aquitaine region). In the 19th century, the fashion sea bathing imported from England. Royan thus becomes THE seaside resort to visit. The Bordeaux bourgeoisie and all of Paris frequented this marvellous place, which would later be rivalled by Arachon. Royan was colonised from 1940 to 1945, year, during which 85 % of it was destroyed by Allied bombing raids. Only neighbourhoods to the west (Pontaillac), and to the east, along of the Grande Conche.

In the 1950s, the need to rebuild Royan was obvious. The Notre-Dame church, the central market and the congress centre are symbols of this renaissance. You'll be amazed when you visit these magnificent sites. A little background information: around 1890, the large Émile Zola was a regular visitor to Royan. Who would have thought it?

What's more, the listed covered market, the Protestant centre, The entire seafront and picturesque villas are also a must-see for lovers of beauty.

Meschers-sur-Gironde is located 12 km south of Royan. Make way for the picturesque with the Régulus caves. Young and old alike love this site. In fact, these are ancient cave dwellings that have been transformed in a museum. You can admire the houses inhabited areas close to the Matata caves, also known as« Caves of Regulus», dug into the Meschers limestone cliff. But it's best to take the 45-minute guided tour to learn all about this exceptional site.

You can also discover the smallest estuary in Europe, the Seudre, and the largest, the Gironde, guarded by the famous Cordouan lighthouse. A divine world of land and sea awaits you. What's more, if you go to Royan as a romantic getaway, you can visit Mornac-sur-Seudre and Talmont-sur-Gironde will be doubly enjoyable.
