La Palmyre Zoo

A constantly evolving site

The iconic Rock of the Pink Flamingos is still home to visitors to La Palmyre zoo. This lush setting, located directly outside the ticket offices, has been setting the tone since 1984: La Palmyre zoo will win you over with its green setting and the quality of its reproductions of different natural areas. It's the perfect activity for a holiday in camping in Royan. The site has undergone a number of changes since the creation of this waterfall for pink flamingos: since then, for example, sea lions have arrived, giving the site the first birth in the country for this species; the hippopotamus enclosure has been rebuilt, as has the Asian elephant plateau and house. Egyptian fruit bats have inaugurated an innovative nocturama. A vivarium was created, as well as a pool for polar bears. In the 2000s, the zoo celebrated the arrival of the wild dogs and was able to open a new great ape area, which took more than 2 years to complete. The last ten years have also seen the creation of a new building for varis makis and capuchins, the opening of a new enclosure for greater kudu, the birth of a white rhinoceros, the refurbishment of the mandril enclosure and the construction of a new shop. All good reasons to come back if you visited the zoo a few years ago!

18 hectares of greenery for the whole family to explore

La Palmyre Zoo is an exceptional natural area, in the heart of a forest of holm oaks and pines, just a stone's throw from the seaside. Open all year round, it offers a verdant setting whatever the season. The 4.5-kilometre route through the park makes for a great day out with the whole family. A must on the Côte de Beauté, La Palmyre zoo is fascinating and captivating for all ages. Each enclosure has its own explanatory panel explaining the animal present and the status of its species, its habits, its region of origin and its diet. This is an opportunity to glean very precise information about certain individuals, but also sometimes simply to dispel a few preconceived ideas: penguins fly well, and have very little in common with penguins! The zoo's missions in terms of species conservation are also clearly explained to visitors.

Activities at La Palmyre Zoo

Sea lions put on a show at La Palmyre zoo since 1985. It's an opportunity to be amused by their antics, but above all to learn a great deal about their life in the wild, thanks to the work of the keepers. A large part of their feeding is done during the shows themselves: you'll be amazed at the dexterity and speed with which they catch the fish thrown by the keepers, both in the water and in the air! The sea lion show is also touching because it reveals the close bond forged between the animals and the humans who feed and train them every day.
