A brief history of the La Coubre lighthouse
The Pointe de la Coubre, where the lighthouse is located, is one of the most dangerous places for sailing boats: ships have been wrecked in the past because of invisible sandbanks. Lighthouses were used to mark the coastline from the 17th century onwards. Two lighthouses were built, but coastal erosion made it necessary to build a new one. The current La Coubre lighthouse was built in 1904 less than 2 km from the ocean, and went into service in 1905. It has a range of 52 km, making it one of the most powerful lighthouses in the country.
A fabulous panorama
Climbing to the top of the lighthouse is no mean feat! You'll need to save your breath to make it up the 300-step staircase. Once at the top, you'll discover an impressive panorama of the surrounding area: the Cordouan lighthouse, the Arvert peninsula, the wild coast of La Tremblade, the Coubre forest... La Coubre Lighthouse Museum
After the climb, visit the interior of the La Coubre lighthouse There is also a museum where you can find out how the lighthouses work. Four areas tell the story of the lighthouses and display the equipment used to operate them. For the little ones, there's a booklet of fun games to round off the visit.
The lighthouse hosts events throughout the year, including temporary exhibitions and guided tours in the evenings. Finally, in the lighthouse shop, you'll find hundreds of items to buy as souvenirs of your visit to the Phare de La Coubre.
