Port Royan

Located between the Foncillon district and the Grande Conche beach, Royan marina opens onto the open sea through a channel 0.10 metres below chart datum. It has a thousand moorings and is protected from the swell by numerous breakwaters. It has a slipway, a handling system (mooring, launching, trimming, dismasting, towing) and a host of facilities (showers, internet access, etc.).
Located just 7 km from the port, the 4-star campsite in Royan is ideally located.

Right in the heart of the city, the port is made up of two pleasure craft docks with a technical careening (pre-treatment) area and a fishing basin equipped with a pontoon, capable of accommodating river cruise liners.

The History of Royan

Since the Middle Ages, Royan acted as port of war. Situated at the foot of a fortified castle, then a citadel, this place steeped in history has welcomed and accompanied many kings and queens.

In 1242, the King of England and Duke of Aquitaine Henry III at the head of a detachment of his cavalry, came to protect his mother Isabelle d'Angoulême and her husband Hugues de Lusignan from the French king Louis IX.

In 1288, the King-Duke Edward 1st arrived in Royer to inspect the town's fortifications. During the Hundred Years« War, the English vessel »Sainte-Marie" accompanied King John II of France, who had been held captive since the Battle of Poitiers. They sailed past the port before heading for England.

Even though peace had returned, the safety of the coast was not guaranteed. From Spanish pirates made the region their own. In 1490, several ships in the Royan roadstead were attacked.

The port was not restored until the 19th century. It was reborn thanks to the great fashion sea bathing. The town of Royan became one of the most important seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast.
