Built in the XIX\u1d49 century during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, Fort Boyard<\/strong> had a strategic mission: protect the Charente estuary and Rochefort arsenal<\/strong> against enemy incursions. Its position in the heart of the Antioch Channel was ideal for coastal surveillance, but its construction proved complex due to the instability of the sandy seabed. Work lasted over 30 years, interrupted several times by technical difficulties and cost overruns. Finally completed in 1857, it quickly became obsolete due to advances in artillery.<\/p>\n
