Royan, a town with a rich history<\/h2>\n

Royan is a commune in the department of Charente-Maritime <\/a><\/strong>(New Aquitaine region). In the 19th century, the fashion sea bathing<\/strong> imported from England. Royan<\/a> thus becomes THE seaside resort<\/strong> to visit. The Bordeaux bourgeoisie and all of Paris frequented this marvellous place, which would later be rivalled by Arachon. Royan was colonised from 1940 to 1945,<\/strong> year, during which 85 % of it was destroyed by Allied bombing raids. Only neighbourhoods to the west (Pontaillac),<\/strong> and to the east, along of the Grande Conche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the 1950s, <\/strong>the need to rebuild Royan was obvious.<\/strong> The Notre-Dame church, the central market and the congress centre are symbols of this renaissance. You'll be amazed when you visit these magnificent sites. A little background information: around 1890, the large<\/strong> \u00c9mile Zola<\/strong> was a regular visitor to Royan. Who would have thought it?<\/p>\n
